Getting To The Convention

How do you get to the Convention? It’s easy!

By Air:

The Washington, DC area is served by three airports:

  • Dulles International (IAD) in Virginia

Dulles International (IAD): Dulles is the largest of the 3 area airports and you can fly there from literally anywhere in the world. Dulles hosts international arrivals and US Customs, if you are arriving from overseas. The Metro has not yet built out as far as Dulles (and will not be completed there by Convention time). While there is an option to take a bus from IAD to the Rosslyn DC Metro stop and take the Metro to the Hotel, it is a long trip and it is highly suggested to take a taxi, Uber or a rental car instead.

Drive time from Dulles to Rockville is about an hour – under optimum traffic. Traffic in the DC Metro area can vary widely; with mid-day (11-2) and late evening (after 7pm) being the best times.

  • Ronald Reagan Washington National (DCA) in Virginia

Ronald Reagan Washington National (DCA): If you can fly in to Reagan National (as it’s known locally) you can get to the Convention hotel via Washington’s Metro rail system. Simply take a Largo-Bound Blue Line train from the Reagan Airport station to the Metro Center station. At Metro Center station, transfer to a Shady Grove-Bound Red Line train. Get off the Red Line train at the Twinbrook station and you are 108 paces from the Rockville Hilton! As of this writing, that trip will cost $3.85.  Click here to see Relevant DC Metro map

If you fly in to Reagan National, you may not need a car. The Metro can take you to most local attractions and the Convention will facilitate carpooling to layout tours and side trips. However, without a car you may miss some great ‘getaway day’ layouts on Sunday Aug. 26.

  • Baltimore-Washington International Airport (BWI) in Maryland

Baltimore-Washington International Airport (BWI): BWI is physically the closest to the Convention hotel. It can also be the least expensive airport to fly into/out of; so if you are budget conscious, check fares to BWI. BWI is on Baltimore’s Light Rail system and, although it is possible to get from BWI to the Convention hotel using Metro/Light Rail, the route is so circuitous and time consuming that you’d only consider it if you are a transit die-hard. Otherwise you will require a taxi, Uber or a rental car. The route from BWI to the Convention hotel bypasses much of the DC area traffic.

By Rail:

What better way to get to a model railroad convention than by train? Yes, the Convention can be reached by train, and with surprisingly few complications. If you come in by rail, you may not need a car. The Metro can take you to most local attractions and the Convention will facilitate carpooling to layout tours and side trips. However, without a car you may miss some great ‘getaway day’ layouts on Sunday Aug. 26.

  • Metro:

If you are a denizen of the greater Washington, DC area, you can get to the Twinbrook station on the Red Line via Metro (including Metro bus).

  • MARC & VRE:

Maryland commuter rail (MARC) and Virginia’s commuter rail (VRE) can get you into center city Washington, from there you can get to the Convention hotel via Metro. In fact, if you will be traveling via MARC’s Brunswick Line, you can get off at the Rockville MARC station and either transfer to the Metro Red Line for one station to Twinbrook or take a short 3 mile taxi ride to the hotel. If the VRE/MARC head to Union Station, take a Red Line train heading for Shady Grove. Get off the Red Line train at the Twinbrook station and you are 108 paces from the Rockville Hilton! As of this writing, that Metro trip will cost $3.85.  Click here to see Relevant DC Metro map

Note: MARC and VRE *DO NOT* provide service on WEEKENDS.

  • Amtrak:

Amtrak has many trains that terminate in Washington, DC Union Station. From Union Station you can take Metro to the Convention.

Northeast Corridor Trains: Amtrak has too many trains traversing the Northeast Corridor between Boston and Washington each day to list. From the high-speed Acela to numerous locals. Get to Washington Union Station from there descend into the Metro and take a Red Line train heading for Shady Grove. Get off the Red Line train at the Twinbrook station and you are 108 paces from the Rockville Hilton! As of this writing, that Metro trip will cost $3.85. Click here to see Relevant DC Metro map

Long Distance Rail: Many storied passenger train routes pass through or terminate at Washington Union Station. The Capital Limited, Crescent and Silver Meteor & Silver Star (now called Silver Service) to name a few. Add newer Amtrak routes like the Cardinal and the Vermonter and you can get here from there. Traveling from west of the Mississippi you will need to make connections in Chicago or New Orleans to one of the routes named above. Once at Washington Union Station descend into the Metro and take a Red Line train heading for Shady Grove. Get off the Red Line train at the Twinbrook station and you are 108 paces from the Rockville Hilton! As of this writing, that Metro trip will cost $3.85. Click here to see Relevant DC Metro map

By Road:

Obviously, there are more ways to get to the Washington, DC area by road than can be enumerated.

If you are coming by car and- you are staying at the Convention hotel, you’ll enjoy FREE underground parking.

Dealers arriving with cargo trailers and- staying at the convention hotel will have FREE surface parking for their vehicles with trailers.

Schedule your arrival in the DC area for mid-day (11-2) or late evening (after 7 pm) to avoid most DC traffic. If you are coming in from the north or the west, coming down I-270 to the hotel will circumvent DC traffic.
